In a time where police departments across the country are getting a lot of negative publicity, one particular cop has brought light to the badge in a dashcam video EVERYONE is talking about. Master Cpl. Jeff Davis lip-syncs to Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off,’ but why did he do it? Better yet, what motivated the Dover Police Department to create the video?
It’s all about the power of social media.
The ‘Shake It Off Cop‘ sat down with Carson Daly of the Today Show to discuss how the video came to be. The Dover Police Department wanted to create a video to help gain Facebook likes and he said he was 100% for it. You might be wondering why would a police department care if they have Facebook likes anyway?
Well we all know the power of social media and police departments across the country are using it to humanize their role in the community. One great example is the Rosenberg Police Department. Remember when two of the Rosenberg officers lip-synced to Katy Perry’s Dark horse? They are notorious for having fun on their Facebook page and it’s working! The Rosenberg Police Department Facebook page has over 77,000 ‘likes’ and counting, but it’s not always fun and games. In addition to reaching out to the community, they are using it for leads, tips, and safety alerts.
The fact that the Dover Police Department realized they needed a special ‘something’ to push their social media strategy is awesome. The result being a viral video taking over the internet? Pure genius. Even Taylor Swift herself tweeted about it!

My 12-yr-old son and I watched the full ‘Shake It Off Cop’ video on my iPhone as we waited for younger brother to get out of basketball practice yesterday. Hearing his laughter and sharing that moment was pretty cool, but the best part was all the questions he asked. Is it real? Why did they do it? Do most police vehicles have cameras? It opened up a conversation about how police officers are here to help us. They are people just like you and I.
They even dance a little like us.
