Today marks the official day we take the Listerine Healthy Habits Oral Care Challenge, thanks to The Motherhood. For 3 weeks we’re committing ourselves to teaching healthy dental habits among our kids and each other.
Here’s a tidbit you probably didn’t know: 75% of your mouth is missed by brushing alone. I had NO idea. What’s even more startling to families is that almost the same percentage of Americans actually avoid kissing their loved one because of dental problems. I know this all to be true, because my husband suffers from horrible dental issues. It’s a problem. It’s so big that we’ve decided to trudge through it, together, along with our kids. By opening this discussion online and among our family, we hope to correct bad oral habits and build a new foundation (literally) for, not only ourselves, but you guys too. So, first things first, a morsel of honesty from yours truly: I never MAKE my kids floss or use mouthwash. I tell them to brush, but never follow-up to make sure they are.
My family needs drastic oral care help. So, when The Motherhood asked me if I’d like to take part in this challenge, I grew fearful that, if I blogged about this subject, I’d be judged. I’d be talked about Did you HEAR what Sara at Momma Findings said? She has NEVER made her children floss! She NEVER follows up to see if they brushed.
I get it.
But I thought that if my brutal honesty could help MY family move forward with healthy habits, it could possibly motivate you guys too. I could be kidding myself, maybe I’m the only Mom who needed this drastic kick in the butt to get our teeth healthy again. Either way, I’m here. I’m taking the challenge with my husband and kids to take control of the health of our mouths.
We’re not doing this alone. The Motherhood scheduled an awesome webcast with General Dentist Dr. John Dodes and Pediatric Dentist Kaneta Lott and all the bloggers taking part. I learned QUITE a bit and I’ll be sharing some of tips, tricks, and products we learned about in the coming weeks, but I want to share one morsel of information that I’ve been carrying around with me the last few days…
Dental habits are not to be taught, but SHOWN. As a Mom, I don’t think I’ve taken the time to show them proper techniques in flossing, brushing, and using mouthwash. Heck, I don’t even show them that their own MOTHER is flossing or mouthwashing consistently. One thing the dentist said was, brushing time should be family time. Just as you stop your schedule to eat together for dinner time, so should you stop to brush together.
I’ll be updating you on our progress throughout the next 3 weeks, bringing you tips I learned, products we’re loving, and how it’s impacted our lives.
