I am one of those people who came to know Christ as an adult. I am the exception to the rule. I was united with my Father at the age of 24. He welcomed me with open arms, His lost child, His love.
My testimony has been this incredible, heart wrenching, story of love, hurt, and self reflection that has grown me into a woman of faith. It’s not easy becoming a Christian so much later in life than most. I relied on children’s DVDs to learn the stories of the Bible. In fact, I learned them right along with my toddlers. I was a baby Christian, just like them. I think that’s why I’m so emotional as I listen to this new album, written by Nichole Nordeman and sung by some of the biggest names in Christian music. It’s called The Story, 18 songs that take you from creation through the Bible and onto revelation. It’s incredible.
THE STORY is an unparalleled project from the best-known artists in Christian music. The songs on THE STORY take timeless biblical stories and provide a completely new context into how God’s story of love and redemption intersects with our story of brokenness and failures resulting in a new story of hope and rescue. The CD contains 18 all-new songs written by multiple Dove Award-Winners Nichole Nordeman & Bernie Herms, produced by Brown Bannister & Bernie Herms, and a stellar line-up of artists across all major labels. (Music Inspired By) THE STORY is based on a collaboration with authors Randy Frazee (The Heart Of The Story) & Max Lucado (God’s Story Your Story) as well as Zondervan’s bible The Story.
I remember the day like it was just yesterday.. Me sitting in a room of women, all of whom I JUST met that month, completely quiet, contemplating a way to just run out of there.
I took a leap of faith and attended a MOMS Bible Study after moving to a new city away from my family and friends. During their Christmas Party we played a game. Each of us had a Christian character on our back, then we were asked to guess who it was after given clues. To say I was embarrassed would be an understatement. I didn’t even KNOW the stories of the Bible, let alone Christian Music Artists or big named Evangelists.
I was there because I felt alone.
I wasn’t there to play a guessing game I had no chances of winning.
My character was Michael W. Smith. After they told me who it was, I gave them a half-hearted smile and pretended like I knew who that was, “Oh man! I should have guessed that!”
The truth is… I am the exception. I was lost, but now I’m found.
I am the exception to the rule. Most people who come to know Christ, do it at a very young age. I came to know Him at the age of 24, after marriage, after two children, after a night where I felt the strongest pull to Him, that I’ve ever felt.
I am the exception.
I went home on a mission to learn more about this almighty God, to read His word, to learn the “The Story” of the Bible, how He created the earth, how He sent His son to save me, and how He’ll come again.
I couldn’t get enough of this miraculous story of God. I was thirsty for more.
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. Psalm 42:1
Listening to The Story CD was quite amazing. I mean, I learned about it. I read about it. I watched the video introducing me to the album, but this? This I was not expecting. The album brought an emotion over me that made me want to read and study each and every story all over again (with the music in the background).
I felt closer to each character in their particular story and song. One of my favorites was Esther, sung by Mandisa. Oh sweet, bold, Esther who trusted in God’s timing, after winning the world’s first ever “beauty pageant”. She had a self preservation that turned into a brave determination and I felt it, listening to Mandisa’s song Born for This.
The Story CD has inspired me to personally turn to those stories and cling tight to the Hope that God gives us in our own story.
