The Summer is sizzling, here in Texas, and there’s no sign of stopping all the fun we’ve been having as a family. SeaWorld, Picnics, Movies, Parties, Concerts (Look for our coverage on the American Idol Concert right here in Houston!).. You name it, we’ve done it. Seriously having the Best Summer Ever!
Last week, we took an unconventional direction and took on the high seas of Galveston Bay. Okay, so the seas weren’t HIGH, but you can my drift. StarFleet Yachts invited my family to embark on a sightseeing cruise that launched from Kemah, onto Galveston Bay, and back around to Clear Lake. It was my kids VERY first time on a boat (and the Lynchburg Ferry doesn’t count). Today, I’ve got the scoop on the Star Cruiser Yacht, the cruise festivities, and JUST what to expect out of this family-friendly adventure.
Star Fleet owns and operates a fleet of five entertainment yachts on Clear Lake and Galveston Bay that are used for corporate events, weddings and celebrations in the Houston area for up to 375 guests. We also offer public cruises where individuals may purchase tickets on weekends and for special events. The company has its own private Kemah marina; employs fifty crew members and staff and has been in business since 1993.
We were SO excited, when we were invited to take a Sightseeing Cruise with StarFleet Yachts. Granted, I could have chosen a Romantic Cruise or a Wine Tasting Cruise, I just thought it best to include the kids and see how family-friendly these boats REALLY are. I mean, that’s why you have me here, right? Bring you ALL things Family-Friendly?
We were booked aboard the the Star Cruiser, which seats up to 80 guests! They do ask you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to launch time, but if you know me you know that I’m early ALL the time. It’s a problem. I understand I may need professional help to solve it, but that’s neither here nor there.
Before you jump on board, they offer to take a pre-board picture in front and I absolutely LOVED that because I’m always the one behind the camera. Check out ours:
If that’s not the cutest family, I don’t know what is!? Once we boarded the yacht, we checked out the, very large, screen inside the boat that told us what route we’d be taking. This was great because, throughout the cruise, you could look on that screen and see exactly where we are and where we’re going. The Captain and Staff also let us in on some REALLY cool history about the area in Kemah, Galveston, and Clear Lake.
What to Expect:
I know you have questions and guess what? I have the answers! And if I don’t? Then, my friends over at StarFleet do, but one of the common questions friends, family, and readers have asked is:
What’s included in the the Sightseeing Cruise? Well, I really wasn’t sure myself when I booked our cruise, but I was thrilled to see that they keep it really simple, being it’s a rather short cruise.
- One and a Half Hour Cruise on Clear Lake and Galveston Bay
- Sightseeing along with DVD slideshow and narration
- Learn the history of the area and see beautiful boats and homes close up.
- $1.00 ice water, juice, coffee, soda, and tea (No outside beverages allowed)
- Cash Bar for alcoholic beverages

How much does it cost? Here’s the best part! We’re a family of five on a very strict budget, especially when it comes to extra activities in the Summer. Tickets cost $29.00 plus tax. Granted, it’s MORE than a day at the movies, but for a few hours on the bay and a WHOLE new unique experience? It’s a GREAT price.
|After the cruise check out the Kemah Boardwalk! How can you go wrong with food, rides, and fun for the whole family?|
Is it wheelchair accessible? The Star Cruiser (the yacht we were on for sightseeing) and Star Gazer are, indeed, wheelchair capable. The Cruiser takes a little effort as the ramp is steeper, but StarFleet’s crew members are happy to assist anyone who may need it. The Star Spirit is, however, not wheelchair friendly. So, keep that in mind when booking your cruise. This could also be helpful if you know you have to bring a stroller on board.

What types of cruises do they offer?
StarFleet, by FAR, offers a variety of cruises to best suit your needs, including:
- Sunday Champagne Brunch
- Lake Limo Private Charter
- Murder Mystery Dinner
- Wine Tasting Cruise
- Romantic Dining
- Sightseeing Cruise
- Themed Cruises (Fireworks, Dances, etc)
You can ALSO book them for special ocassions, such as Weddings, Birthdays, Corporate Events, and Reunions.
With our cruise over, I’m itching for an excuse to get back on the bay with my girlfriends for murder mystery dinner or my husband for a romantic cruise. This is such an out-of-the-ordinary way of celebrating friends, anniversaries, or spending time with the family and I have to point out the fact that the staff? The staff was outstanding and had ALL of us laughing. Plus, they gave all the kids on the boat free Mardi Gras Beads! It’s the little things folks. When you’re good to my kids your service increases by 100, in my book!
For more information and to book your StarFleet Yacht Cruise, head over to www.starfleetyachts.com. Cruise prices vary, but the sightseeing tickets sell for $29.00 per person plus tax. Keep in mind that the pre-boarding picture is $10.00 and they print it for you RIGHT on the boat, but if you’re like me, you want a digital copy which is only $8.00 and emailed to you later in the day.
