I love hanging out with my 6-yr-old daughter. She’s turning 7 next month and she’s hitting a stage in development that I’m quite familiar with and excited about. She has come to realize the importance of personal hygiene and the differences between how a girl takes care of herself versus how a boy does. Her room is full of lotions (that she actually needs due to her eczema), hair care, and the wonderful world of lip gloss.
When I discovered Scientific Explorer Spa Kits, thanks to Team Mom, I knew this would be an “experiment” made to order. Literally. These kits mix science and fun by introducing children to the science behind products such as Body Mist, Soap, and Lip Balm. All things my daughter has quickly fallen in love with the last few months. So, yesterday we entered our “Science Lab”, learned about odor molecules, diffusion, wafting, and what our favorite sense says about our own personality. I pegged her right on target: lighthearted, playful, and carefree.
For young, curious minds, nothing is more fun than Giddy Up’s Scientific Explorer kits. New selections include Heavenly Hair Kit, Bath Fizzer Kit, Shimmer Soap Kit, Blissful Body Mist, Lovely Lip Balm and MythBusters® Science of Sports, a new addition to the licensed line of MythBusters® science activity kits. For ages 8+.
What to Expect:
We received the Blissful Body Mist kit to review. You can expect to receive three dyes/fragrances. Ours were cucumber melon, strawberry, and vanilla.
In addition to the fragrances, you’ll receive three body mist bases in small bottles (perfect for smaller hands). The kit also comes with sequins, because you know ALL girls love a little fun and glitter. Don’t worry, this does not affect how the fragrance sprays out. This is all for a fun look to your mist.
It also comes with an activity manual to help you get the most of the kit. There you’ll learn fun facts and activities.
When the Blissful Body Mist Kit arrived, I knew it was perfect for my daughter (and to tell you the truth, perfect for me too). This kit has all the elements to help girls design their very own body mist. Did you know the oldest perfumes date back more than 4,000 years?! They were made from herbs, spices, and flowers. My daughter and I learned so much about the history of perfume. Her jaw dropped when I read a fun fact that stated: In the old days, people didn’t bathe or shower very often. Instead, they used perfume to make themselves smell better.
Our favorite was learning about how different people are more sensitive to smells than others. One activity asked us to stand on one side of the room while someone sprayed the mist into the air. The first person who smells the mist should raise their hand. This taught us that others might take longer than others to smell scents while others might not smell it all. In each instance us girls could smell it faster than the boys. Didn’t surprise us at all because we all learned that women have stronger sense of smell than men.
I, as a mother, love that young girls learn scientific facts and create a product all their own. The body mists give just a splash of fragrance for the skin. Not as strong-smelling as colognes or perfumes, they leave a light aroma on your skin. This is perfect because, as I mentioned above, my daughter suffers from eczema and can not wear heavy/strong perfumes or lotions.
Improvements and Suggestions:
Although we absolutely loved our kit and had a great time experimenting, there was one thing I think could use a little improvement. The sequins comes in a small ziploc type bag. This is very tiny and snaps closed, however, my daughter tried to pour it into her bottle making more of a mess than anything. It’s just not made to pour out of the bag. Suggestion: Pinch out desired sequins a little at a time out of the bag. It would be great if the sequins came in a small plastic bottle for easy pouring.
In the end, my daughter was so excited about the unique scent she created. She chose strawberry because she said it was sweet. “Mom, the green smells sour and the yellow is too sweet for me.” Before we even started I knew she’d say that. While I cooked dinner she did a little personal experimenting and made a bottle of vanilla body mist for me and another bottle of strawberry for her friend that lives next door. This is a perfect way to have a little Mother/Daughter time or for sleepovers.
You can purchase Scientific Explorer Spa Kits at stores such as Learning Express. The Blissful Body Mist Kit sells for the suggested retail price of $9.99. To learn more Giddy Up’s Scientific Explorer Kits visit: www.giddyup.com.
