Have you ever been on a flight with a screaming child on a Mother’s lap behind you? It almost makes you lose your mind. Well, imagine that YOU are that mother. Changes things doesn’t it?
I was “That Mom” a few years ago when I flew alone with my 5-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son (he was almost two). I held him in my lap as thoughts of how unsafe it felt drifted in and out of my head. There had to be a better way to travel with this child. He screamed the entire flight, kicked the guy’s seat in front of us over and over, and I, silently, cried into his back.
We are at the peak of Summer Travel and young families are packing their bags and gearing up to fly to their vacation destination. I’m excited to let you guys know about CARES Kids Fly Safe, the innovative and safe way for tots to fly.
CARES Child Aviation Restraint System is designed specifically for aviation use for children age 1 and older who weigh between 22 and 44 pounds. These youngsters are old enough to be in their own seats, but are too small for the seat belt alone to protect them and provide the safety they require during airplane travel. Their bodies cannot withstand the jolts that are common in routine air travel, much less emergency situations, and they flail forward or slide beneath the seat belt if they are not held securely in place.
- CARES is the first and only harness type Aviation Child Safety Device to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an alternative to a car seat.
- CARES is an elegantly designed belt-and-buckle device that works in conjunction with the regular airplane seat belt and provides young travelers the same level of safety as a car seat.
- CARES weighs just one pound and fits into a 6″ stuff sack! It is easily portable, simple to install, adjustable to every size airplane seat, and usable on any seat in the airplane, except in the emergency exit rows.
- Need your car seat on the other end of the trip? Just check it through as luggage – and carry CARES on board in your pocket!
What to expect:
CARES really makes it simple. You receive the CARES child restraint, DVD installation instructions, CARES cards to spread the word on your flight (because you KNOW people are going to ask about it), and an instructional safety card. Check it out:
It all comes nestled in an easy-to-carry bag that you can use for kids snacks, books, etc. Hook it onto your stroller and voila!
Is it easy to use?
I wanted to check out how easy it actually is to use. So, I tried to “figure it out”, before reading the instructions, using my dining room chair. Guess what? It was SOOO easy! I double checked my installation on the safety card and I did, indeed, install it correctly.
The strap fits easily on the back of your airplane seat, with the buckle in front of your child, and a slot left for the airplane seat belt to loop through.
Do we really NEED this when flying?
In my personal opinion, I understand how expensive flying can be. We’re a family of five and it’s almost cheaper to drive than fly. So, if you have a child who is able to sit in your lap, I can see why one would choose that option for financial reasons. I did, when I flew, but I regretted it every second as he kicked the person in front of us. A friend of mine on Facebook said this about flying with her children:
I felt my children were safe on my lap when they were small. Now I kinda feel funny about the seat belt because it doesn’t seem to fit small children but I always make sure that it as tight as it can go.
I feel the same way with my young children. Children are so small and airplane seat belts can only go so tight. CARES Kids Fly Safe child restraints easily buckle children safely into their seats with ease.
Momma Findings Family Thoughts:
From experience, I know how hard it is to travel with young children. Car seats, Luggage, Diaper Bags, Strollers, Toys to keep them busy, Toddler snacks, etc. On my flight, I actually cried the entire way as my toddler made it impossible for the people around us to relax. I just KNEW if he had his own car seat, he’d be more comfortable and I’d have extra hands to tend to his and my daughter’s needs.
When I was asked to review CARES, I knew immediately it’s an innovative way for young children to travel. I’ve traded horror flight stories with other mothers, so I understand the need young families have to make traveling easier.
I asked my friends on Facebook if they have ever flown with young children and a car seat. My friend Stacey said this about how hard it was:
My child was in my lap. I had to drag the seat on and off the plane and I was by myself! Arghhh! Plus, nobody offered help and everybody kept bumping into me. I cried most of the flight because I had to switch planes. It was the worst time of my life. That was during the hurricane and I had to evacuate because our power was out for two months.
To say that parents need help when traveling in the air is an understatement. We want our children to be safe while flying, but we also need to keep our sanity throughout the process. CARES, in my opinion, the perfect option for families with young children in the air.
CARES Kids Fly Safe child restraint can be purchased for the suggested retail price of $74.95 plus shipping and handling at www.kidsflysafe.com or a retailer near you.
