My two oldest children just finished their second week of school today. Zach, my 6 year old, is in 1st grade and lovin’ it! Abby will be 5 soon and just started Kindergarten. I must say she is enjoying herself quite well….. a little too much if you ask me. You see, she has so much fun with her friends and new teachers that some things just slip her mind at the end of the school day. She has lost 3 lunch boxes and one jacket. It’s barely the second week of school!
I became so frustrated, mainly because I never went through this with her brother. He rarely came home without his belongings. Now she wants US to buy her a new Camp Rock lunch box and we quickly told her to brown bag it. Well, her father insists she experience taking lunch in a grocery sac. Momma isn’t so sure.
It sounds crazy, but I actually uttered these very words to my husband in frustration:
“Why is she SOOOO irresponsible?!”
“Because she is her father’s daughter.”
Alright, we can all benefit from being more responsible in our daily life, even as adults. I am so grateful to have found The Responsibility Project by Liberty Mutual. This is a great site with short films aimed at helping parents teach their children about responsibility. Resources you might find interesting on the site include short films, discussion guides, and a blog to help families teach and talk about personal responsibility.
One of my personal favorites is entitled the Table Guardians. Take a look:
