I’m not sure about all you Mommas out there, but I don’t have much time to watch T.V. around here. The morning is usually chaotic, the kids watch their shows in the afternoon, and the evening.. it’s all about dinner, baths, and soon to be homework when school starts. By the time I have time to relax, I usually just want to hit the hay or sit and visit with hubby.
Created by Emmy winning producer Steven Bochco and lawyer/writer David Feige, this gripping series stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar (NYPD Blue), Gloria Reuben (ER), and Jane Kaczmarek (Malcom in the Middle). It follows the lives of young lawyers who work on opposite sides -the public defender’s office and the district attorney’s office- as well as those who sit in judgment on their cases.
While watching the pilot and two different episodes, I noticed that there didn’t seem to be a “good guy” or “bad guy”. It seemed that both the Public Defenders Office and the DA both had adequate time to display each point of view. So, I wasn’t surprised when I read that Bochco said this:
“Raising the Bar is not geared specifically toward the public defenders or the prosecutors. We try to give equal time to both points of view, with an eye toward revealing the extent to which the system doesn’t work very well. It certainly doesn’t have all that much to do with justice. It has more to do with keeping the conveyor belt turning, the idea that if every case in the system goes to trial, the system grinds to a halt.”
I must say, I’m a sucker for a legal series of any kind. I mean who wasn’t a big fan of The Practice?! I’ll be tuning in this Fall along with my husband who enjoyed watching it and his friend who seemed to like the eye candy of Natalia Cigliuti (All My Children) and Melissa Sagemiller (Sleeper Cell).
This is definatly a wait-till-the-kids-are-in-bed kind of show, but who’s kids are up at 10:00 at night anyway? And although it’s an adult drama series, it isn’t’ as racy as most. The cursing is limited and there is little sexual scenes (for now at least).
Momma: Approves and plans on curling up with hubby and a giant bowl of popcorn on Monday nights.
