If you keep up with my writings you know about the “Havoc in the Coffee Aisle” yesterday. I haven’t been that stirred up by a stranger in a LONG time. I felt my anger was warranted because these are my precious jewels she was yelling at. MY PRECIOUS CHILDREN, who were actually on their best behavior that day.
So, I’ve been listening to my Christian Radio station today and reading some in my Bible. I have all sorts of blog entries that have been circling my head for the last week and I want to get them all out there before the thought is gone. (I write them in my prayer/blog journal, but still the moment passes if my energy for those words dissipates). Anyhow, I’ve been struggling on what to write next, but God really laid a conviction on me about yesterday. As I was reading today in James I read this:
With the tongues we bless God our Father’ with the same tongues we curse the very men and women he made in his image. Curses and blessings out of the same mouth! My friends, this can’t go on. James 3:9-10 The Message
Not only did God give me this passage today, but they spoke of the same thing on the radio station today and in blogs I read daily. If only I had this scripture tucked away in my heart:
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger Proverbs 15:1
Can you imagine the difference it would have made in my Coffee Aisle yesterday? Can you imagine if I had ONLY used kind words to this woman? This anger would have been extinguished before it had time to flare!
We all know how difficult it is to be kind to a stranger who has been unkind to you. But as I read these passages it makes me reflect on the words or tone “I” use with my children. Yes, they can be difficult! Yes, they can be disrespectful! Yes, they can be down right unruly, but if my words reflect the Mother I want them to know me as, then I need to change some things.
Have you used your tongue as a weapon lately?
