What is your favorite aisle at the grocery store? Mine? I LOVE the coffee aisle! Not just ANY coffee aisle either…. Harris Teeter has the BEST coffee aisle out of all the grocery stores I’ve been to. When I run out of coffee I do a little happy jig because I can walk on over to the coffee aisle inhale those aromas and KNOW that my house will smell like that when I pick one of their delicious selections. It smells just like any coffeehouse would smell. No joke.
I had to say that in order to say this, “Don’t mess with me when I’m in my heavenly coffee aisle at Harris Teeter!!!”
Today, all three kids and I head over to pick up a few grocery items. I’m especially excited because we just got our tax refund and I want to splurge on a good Cinnabon coffee. I’ve actually looked forward to this all day. So, as we pick up most of our items the anticipation sets in… the kids are doing great and Rudy is busy people watching. I’m there. I smell it. It’s heavenly.
All of a sudden I hear a cranky old voice, “Move!” What? Excuse me? Who is this 80 year old cranky woman talking to?! MY CHILDREN!? They were minding their own business looking at cookies or something. I politely say to them, “Kids, please move out of the way. Come over here with Mommy.” This woman then proceeds to say, “MOVE! You NEED to get over there with your Mom!” All the while, she is rolling her eyes and sighing the biggest sighs I’ve ever heard. I finally say, “Thanks for doing that, but I’ve got it under control. I’ve already told them to move and they were doing that when you decided to raise your voice at them. I don’t appreciate your tone nor do I appreciate you telling MY children what to do.” Now.. I should have handled it different with respect to the elderly .. this I know, but she wouldn’t let it go! She says, “You don’t APPRECIATE?! You should be grateful that I didn’t run them over with my basket. You should be thankful that someone disciplines them in public so there won’t be chaos! If they HAD gotten run over.. the only person to blame would be you because you aren’t paying attention!”
I am in AWE! Yes, folks, AWE! I’m literally frozen in shock over this tiny little 80 year old woman treating me and my children this way? ESPECIALLY in my Taj Mahal of AISLES! My FAVORITE PART OF GOING TO THE GROCERY STORE!! She then walks off, and it’s over.. but we run into her again in the NEXT aisle. I didn’t want to be yelled at again so as we pass her I said (very loudly), “Hold on Kids, we don’t want to get in her way. She might run over us.”
I know it was wrong of me to get in that last little word and in all honestly I should have breathed in a deep breath and calmly backed off, but man I stepped out into the flesh and lost it! Granted, I didn’t yell at her as she did me. Granted, I didn’t punch her like my fist wanted to, but I literally can NOT believe this happened to us.
I think to myself WHO in their RIGHT MIND would act like this?!
I was LIVID! I called my best friend as soon as I got everyone buckled in their carseats and just let it out! She laughed and said, “I’m sorry! It’s funny! Okay.. It’s not funny, but it is!”
In an instant, my anger was gone! What a blessing it is to have a friend who can tell you the whole situation you’ve just encountered is ridiculous! This woman is obviously having a bad day. I am obviously protective of my children. Laugh it off. You’ll never see her again. And realize that this won’t be the last time I will feel the need to protects these sweet cubs of mine.
